The Analytic Theologians and Philosophers

The Scholars Page E-I

On this page you will find a brief profile of the scholars, academics and researchers engaged in both Analytic Philosophy and Theology as well as Islamic Rational Theology ('ilm al-kalam) whose works figure in this site. There is a link to their primary area of work in their respective profile box.

Ramon Harvey

Ramon is the Aziz Foundation Lecturer in Islamic Studies at Ebrahim College in London and lectures on the BA in Islamic Studies at Cambridge Muslim College. He received his MA and PhD in Islamic Studies from SOAS, University of London. His research interests are in Qur’anic studies, Islamic theology and ethics, working from both historical and constructive theological angles. He is currently engaged in a long-term project to develop contemporary Muslim philosophical theology, or kalām jadīd, drawing especially on the Māturīdī school. Ramon’s first book, The Qur’an and the Just Society (2018), and his second one, Transcendent God, Rational World: A Māturīdī Theology (2021), are published by Edinburgh University Press. He is also the editor of a new series for the press: Edinburgh Studies in Islamic Scripture and Theology. He currently is project leader of Beyond Foundationalism: New Horizons in Muslim Analytic Theology at Cambridge Muslim College which is funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

Samir Hussain

Samir studied Evolutionary Biology & Cosmology at McMaster University in Canada and realized that the real answers could only be found with God and in the Islamic tradition.  In 2007 he began studying Islam in English with various preachers & scholars in Canada, eventually moving on to private, intensive study of the classical Islamic sciences scholars in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Cairo, Egypt. During his studies abroad and after returning to Canada, he has worked as a professional educator at both a high school and university level. He has ijazahs to teach most of the texts he has studied with his teachers, which range from beginner to advanced texts across different subjects in the traditional Islamic sciences.
Samir Hussain continues learning and is working towards attaining ijazah in the 10 recitations of the Qur’an. He is also a huge nerd who loves reading and is currently researching for and writing a book in Islamic theology.
He is currently lead instructor at the learning platform Fahm Islamic Education and blogs at https://theusuli.com
